How it works

How the investigation unfolds

Physical evidence. A digital investigation. One gripping case — step by step.

  1. Hands holding the sealed Night of the Murderers case fileStep 1 of 6

    Open the case file

Take out the instructions and the three sealed chapter envelopes. In the online edition, the files are waiting for you in the app.

  2. A phone showing the Murder Mystery Files app sign-in screenStep 2 of 6

    Sign in to the app

The app runs in your browser — on a computer, tablet or phone, with nothing to install. Enter the code from your set and start the game.

  3. Hands holding an envelope marked Chapter IStep 3 of 6

    Open the Chapter I envelope

You open the next envelopes during the game — only once the investigation leads you to them.

  4. A phone showing the interactive town map with the Post Office location activeStep 4 of 6

    Explore the active location

The map of Oakwood Hills shows where to investigate next. On site, evidence, conversations and tasks are waiting.

  5. A phone showing the statuette puzzle in the antique shopStep 5 of 6

    Solve the puzzle

Study the evidence and enter your solution in the app. Every answer reveals new leads, places on the map and further chapters. When you get stuck, the four-level hint system helps you on.

  6. A table with an envelope, suspect photos and evidence markersStep 6 of 6

    Name the killer

In the end you check the alibis, connect the facts and decide who is guilty. Your choice decides the ending.

Case file #001

Night of the Murderers

A Call to Oakwood Hills

In the end, you'll name the killer. The only question is whether you'll name the right one.

Two victims, three suspects. Each of them had a reason, and each is keeping something back.

You gather evidence chapter by chapter until the moment of decision comes. The case has two endings — which one you see is up to you alone.

Why play

Not a board game. An investigation.

Forget pawns, dice and waiting for your turn. Here you really lead the investigation — and every new piece of evidence can change how you see the case.

The case file, chapter envelopes, a phone with the app and a laptop showing the map of Oakwood Hills

Physical evidence. A digital investigation.

What you uncover in the app connects to the evidence on your table: reports, photos and letters from the envelopes — plus the town map, conversations and an audio recording on screen.

A town full of secrets

At first only some places are open to you. New locations unlock as the investigation moves forward.

15+ puzzles in the story

Ciphers, codes, document analysis and deduction. Every solution leads to the next discovery.

Against the clock

One of the tasks has to be done in time. Will you keep a cool head when every second counts?

4 levels of hints

From a small nudge to the full solution. You decide how much help you need.

Two endings

Name the right culprit — and learn the truth. Make a mistake — and the story ends differently.

5 detective badges

The case summary rewards you with a badge — from Persistent Investigator to Legendary Detective.

Highly recommended, a really gripping game. We played as a foursome with our teenage kids and everyone had a fantastic time. The puzzles are quite demanding, so solving them is truly satisfying. I'd gladly buy more games like this.

We played as a group and it was a brilliant evening. Everyone notices something, someone else connects the facts, and suddenly there's a discussion like in a real investigation. The app keeps the case organised and shows the next lead, which keeps the game moving.

  • Buyer 4…5Verified purchaseAllegro · January 2026

I've played plenty of detective games and the pace here is a big plus. You never stand around guessing what to do next — you always know your next move. The app and the physical evidence complement each other really well.

I was sceptical, but the game really pulls you in. Great atmosphere, lots of material to analyse and sensible, logical puzzles. The app guides you well through the investigation, and the physical evidence makes a huge difference. We played as four and the hours flew by.

We bought it as a gift for friends and it was a bullseye. Just opening the case file sets the mood, and then the real investigation begins — analysing documents and photos and connecting the leads.

  • Jolanta J.Verified purchaseFebruary 2026

A very well thought-out detective game. Combining physical materials with the app makes you feel like you're in a real investigation. We spent a good 6 hours on it and it's really absorbing.

My partner and I played and it really drew us in. Fun puzzles, lots of analysing and a great investigative atmosphere. A perfect game for an evening.

The game mechanics were very intuitive. Perfect for people new to this kind of game; seasoned players may find it a little easy. Still, a great game, well made, with a nice story and documents to analyse.

FAQ

Have questions? We've got answers

The most common questions before you start the investigation.

  • The English edition is in preparation — the online edition launches first. Join the detective network (the form at the bottom of the page) and we'll let you know when it's out. The Polish edition is available on Allegro and Empik — see the Store page.

  • Open the case file and take out the instructions and the chapter envelopes. Go to murdermysteryfiles.com/notm, sign in, enter the code from your set and open the Chapter I envelope. The app shows you the first location where the investigation begins.

  • The boxed edition has physical case files in three sealed envelopes and 4 activations for different email addresses. In the online edition all files are in the app and the code works for one account. The case, the puzzles and the endings are identical.

  • 1–8 players. Investigate on your own, as a pair or with family and friends. With the boxed edition everyone can play on their own account (up to 4 accounts per code). The online edition is one account — in a group, play together on one large screen.

  • No. The app runs in your browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

  • Use the four-level hint system: a small nudge, moderate help, a strong hint or the full solution. You decide how much help you need — one tough puzzle won't stop the whole adventure.

  • About 6 hours on average. Progress saves automatically, so you can stop and come back whenever it suits you — even the next evening.
